Gerry was a "World Class" scrum half who had everything-quick feet, good hands, and a fine kicking game, and even though he was only 5ft 6in and 10st 10lb could tackle with the best.

Gerry Helme was a product of the Culcheth amateur club and after a number of trial games was selected to play for Warrington for the first time in the 1945/46 season, and he finished the clubs top try scorer with 14.

He was the first player to win the Lance Todd Trophey twice in Warringtons Challenge Cup victories in 1950 and 1954.

Helme scored the winning try in the famous Odsal Stadium Challenge Cup re-play which had a record crowd of 102,575, however it is widely believed that the real figure for spectators present is closer to 120,000.

Helme also scored the winning try for Great Britain in the first Rugby League World Cup held in France in 1954 winning 16-12

He had a brief flirtation with Keighley before retiring and going on to coach Oldham.

Gerry became involved back in the game in 1977 when the newly formed Culcheth junior teams, helping with the coaching always willing to offer his experience and knowledge to the local lads.He later became the clubs 1st President.
